What Does CBN Stand For?

CBN stands for cannabinol. It’s a phytocannabinoid found in cannabis plants, like high-THC strains (marijuana), and high-CBD strains (hemp). Researchers discovered cannabinol in 1899. It was the first phytocannabinoid isolated from the cannabis plant. Although that was over 120 years ago, research is still a bit limited. There are some studies available, but no human clinical trials yet.  

We do know that CBN is the byproduct of THC. When THC is exposed to heat or degrades via oxidation, it produces CBN. Even though CBN is ‘born’ from THC, it has its own unique chemical profile and set of effects. Most notably, CBN is non-psychotropic in the same way that THC is.    

What is CBN Good For?

Before we can answer this question, we must discuss how CBN interacts with the endocannabinoid system (ECS). This discussion will provide insights into CBN’s effects and what’s it’s good for. The ECS consists of enzymes, endocannabinoids, and the CB1 and CB2 receptors. Many of the CB1 receptors are located in the central nervous system (the brain and spine). And a large number of CB2 receptors live within the immune system. 

Research shows that cannabinol is a partial agonist to the CB1 receptor. So, when you consume CBN, it binds with the CB1 receptors. This binding action has a positive impact on motor activity, appetite, and stress-recovery to name a few.

Does CBN Make You Sleepy?

But, Steep Hill said that new evidence shows that CBN reduces pain and inflammation. Since pain and inflammation are a few reasons why people can’t sleep or stay asleep, CBN could be good for sleep.

Is CBN Good for Pain?

As the research from Steep Hill suggests, CBN is good for pain. In fact, the evidence says the CBN performs much like THC in pain reduction studies. Yet, CBN doesn’t bring the intense high that THC has.   

Is CBN Good for Anxiety?

Unlike CBD, there’s no research to prove whether CBN has anxiolytic effects, or not. However, we know that CBN binds with the body’s CB1 receptors and these receptors directly affect stress-recovery. When the body is stressed, the adrenal glands release cortisol. When in excess, this chemical can lead to anxiety. So, if taking CBN lowers stress levels, it will in turn lower cortisol levels. With lower cortisol levels, anxiety symptoms improve.  

What is the Difference Between CBN and CBD?

Cannabinol (CBN) and cannabidiol (CBD) are produced within the cannabis plant in different ways. The cannabinoid CBG makes CBD, whereas THC produces CBN. The difference in their chemical structures leads to differences in their pharmacological profiles.
